Has anyone heard of housing hamsters in terrariums with soil and living plants?

We have a beautiful rainforest-like setup for our poison dart frogs, and I was thinking of coming up with something similar (but with plants appropriate for hamsters) for our two robo dwarf hamsters. We've always housed our hamsters traditionally, but I would like to do something that would be a little bit more interesting for the hamsters, and more beautiful for our home.

  1. no. definitely not. hamsters natural habitat is the desert so a rain forest type set up isn't appropriate.

if you want to add some sand or something your hamster may enjoy this.

  2. Try a digging box.

Soil would trap nasty bugs, and be too moist. My rats like digging.

The Dapper website has lots of good ideas- My rats love the Pea Fishing too, though I'm not sure how much Hamsters would like it. I would imagine the soil would be WAY too hard to clean- think about how often Hamsters pee and p**p.

EDIT: I'm sure Hamsters would like sand in there, mabye just in one area? You could put it in a tupperware container. My rats like rocks too, you could get some of those and wash them really well. Branches would work too.

    Here's some that are poisonous:
