Has anyone heard of the gas leaks in homes of Santiago, Chile??

I wanted to know more information about them.

My Grandparents died because of a gas leak that was the cities fault in Santiago...

  1. When did your grandparents die?  A lot of homes in Santiago use "balones", propane tanks......so that would not have been the city's fault.


  2. Gas leak were more likely to happen when in the cities the fuel was liquefied petroleum gas (or GLP in Chilean acronym). This gas was heavier than air, which gave a higher chance to suffocate. Nowadays the was used is natural gas, which is lighter than air and floats, making easier the detection.

    This events are rare, and gas companies have an emergency phone to call if a leak occurs, and houses must to have a "green seal" to prove they have proper gas lines and CO and CO2 level. All this efforts are made to reduce this unfortunate events.
