  1. I've been looking at the Web for any scientific studies of apple cider vineger.  I have found nothing (except that using apple cider as a vaginal douche may be irritating and make infection worse.) The sites claiming health benefits for apple cider vinegar are sites that sell the stuff, at costs far higher than a person would pay in the grocery store.

Why don't you look for something that has been tested and shown effective in lowering cholesterol?

If you need to lower cholesterol, don't put your health at risk by trying unproven remedies. Ask your doctor or check the Web, to look for medicine that has been tested and proved to work.

  2. Any reason you're concrened about cholesterol?

High LDL cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease unless you have a genetically, abnormally high LDL count. It's a myth used to promote pharmaceutical sales. LDL is raised when your body has inflammation, such as you'll see in people with unhealthy diets, smokers, etc. It's a dense lipoprotein used by your body in repair of tissues. It's more a symptom of something not 100% right in your body/diet rather than in and of itself a disease. The problem with it is when your body oxidizes it and it becomes plaque in your arteries, thereby narrowing them.

ACV's claims haven't been proven, but I still take raw ACV daily a half-hour before meals. Be sure to dilute it in water before drinking as it is typically diluted to 5% acidity. Make sure you buy raw acv.

  3. Hi. I wouldn't recommend it. Here's why.

The problem is that it's a "forced" treatment and disrupts the body's refined homeostatic mechanism. Excess of one thing creates a loss of something else. A common example is that birth control pills deplete a number of essential vitamins. Another is calcium: Conventional medicine has finally caught up with the fact that women who take calcium become depleted in phosphorus. Now calcium-phosphorus (and sometimes zinc) combos are recommended.

My mother-in-law (otherwise healthy and active) took a tablespoon of vinegar daily for 6 months, recommended for weight loss. It worked. Only, within a few years she developed liver cancer and died a short time later (at a young age, with no genetic predispositions). I connect the two, the vinegar having created a susceptibility in compromising her liver.

The best way to lower cholesterol is through a whole foods diet, healthy weight loss (especially if you're older than 30, definitely if you're in your 40's or 50's), and exercise - a daily, brisk one-hour walk. Weight Watchers provides sound guidance regarding lifestyle (thus, weight loss). Some people have a genetic predisposition to develop cholesterol; others don't. Emotional stress impacts metabolism, therefore cholesterol.

Incorporate any needed lifestyle changes for 6 months. If you're doing all the right things and still have high cholesterol, I'd recommend homeopathy, which is a natural way to heal in both mind and body, including any metabolic dysfunction.

If you decide to see a homeopath, be sure to find someone certified as a Professional Homeopath (the national directory in North America is at http://www.homeopathicdirectory.com). Otherwise, lots of people say they do homeopathy, but they know first-aid and acute care, not the skill level required for the constitutional workup you might need.

This probably wasn't the answer you wanted. I'm in the business of health education.  I have a holistic family practice and a background in nutrition, so speak from more than 25 years experience.

In what it helps control if not cure

  6. I have heard that, but don't know if it is true. Someone told my husband that taking a tablespoon before meals would help you loose weight. He did it for a while and did loose about 25 lbs. He was also trying to eat healthier too.

  7. I've heard all sorts of wonderful miraculous uses for ACV

I've never seen evidence that supports the wild claims.

It's nice with some virgin olive oil on a tossed salad.

  8. Apple Cider Vinegar makes a lot of claims. My husband and I tried it for several months, did nothing for us but practically make us vomit every time we drank it and burn the insides of our bodies. I would not recommend it!
