I don't know about g*y bars specifically, but I've met g**s in the other bars and no one seems to hassle them.  Generally all the bars in Rome seem pretty safe to me.  There are a couple of "english" style bars I can recommend in the Trastevere area:  Mad Jacks Pub, located very close to Largo Argentina and right on Trastevere road.  Also try The Drunken Ship, which is also in Trastevere in Campo di Fiori.  From there you will meet people who can direct you to other cool bars!  Good luck!

If you are near a goood bookstore there are travel guides, including Fodors, I believe, that list g*y &L*****n bars in Rome.

Rome (and Italy in general) is a place where it's "safe" and an accepted custom for older men to walk arm in arm, but not be g*y. Women of all ages do this, but they are also not g*y. Italy is not very open to g*y men, and more would be closeted than you think. But generally the city is safe.
