  1. I've been rescued twice - from the same boat.

First time - towed back to Honolulu, Hawaii by the U.S. Coast Guard after a failed attempt to sail a Cal 40 sailboat from Hawaii to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands.

Second time - rescued from the reef of Kwajalein by the local SAR (Search and Rescue) group after running the boat hard aground on its first 'sunset sail' after it was repaired in Hono and delivered to Kwaj by a professional crew.

  3. No, I have never been rescued at sea, but my husband and I were in the Gulf Stream on our 35 foot sailboat with 35 knot winds in one direction and the Stream going in the other direction.  The Coast Guard flew over us a couple of times and asked if we were ok - the seas were about 20 - 25 feet, and very unpredictable and irregular.  We had lost power.  There was a freighter out there at the same time flying its NUC lights.  It was not nice, but we never considered asking to be taken off.  That lasted for about 36 hours.  We got the engine going eventually and made it to Florida under our own power/sails.

My husband weathered a hurricane at sea about 15 years ago.  That was touch and go, and they could not have been rescued even if they wanted to be - the weather was too bad.

My daughter weathered a hurricane on a sailing vessel of the Portuguese white fleet - she was on board as one of several students, Canadian and Portuguese, doing a sort of re-enactment of a trans-Atlantic crossing such as those done in the 16th century.  Luckily most of the official crew were members of the Portguese navy so they were experienced sailors.

Because I was born and grew up in an area where fishing and the sea are part of the way of life, I know a number of people who have been rescued at sea.  I know three people who were picked up after their fishing trawler sank.  They were in the water in the north Atlantic for a few hours before being picked up.  Two crew members were never found.  The people who were rescued have the greatest respect for those who put their own lives at risk to save others.

  4. Getting a little worried about the 18' Cat you just got??  I haven't yet, but I do have unlimited towing with BoatUS so I don't worry about it to much.  Just use your head and don't rush into anything.  Always go at your own pace even if I'm behind you honking my horn:)
