Next summer (i need a year to prepare as i've never done this before) my boyfriend and I would like to climb a mountain in Britain. When I say climb though, I mean WALK. We want to hike, and have no experience with actual climbing. I think the Great Gable looks nice because the lake district is pretty. But my boyfriend really wants to climb Snowdon in Wales.

Has anyone ever climbed Snowdon? I hear it's a popular mountain so it shouldn't be all too hard. I'd like to hear some people's experiences on it though. Like, how long does it take on average? What's the view like? Are there easier routes and harder routes up? What's the weather like on the climb? Is it easy to get lost? What's the surface like? What's the experience like? Do you think it's do-able for someone with no experience if i train myself for a year? etc.. Any experience is welcome so we can start planning our trip.

  1. aw, its great.

love the views, and its reletivly easy.

When you get nearer the top though, it does start to get misty, and maybe a little rainy (dependant on the weather tbh) -if you have no experiance, you dont need any, i climbed it when i was 7,and im just an ordinary girl (:

it takes between 2-4 hours to hike it, and its well worth a visit :)

Good luck, and have fun ;)

    xx

  2. Hi, I walked up snowdon several years ago.  I can't remember the answers to most of your questions, but the route I took was an easy walk rather than a climb or hike.  So long as you are of reasonable fitness, this should be no problem.

    Have fun!

  3. I think you should buy some good equipments. maybe I could recommand some to you.

  4. I was up there in May.

Snowdon is a very popular mountain. If you go on a day when the weather is nice you can follow the line of people up and down the mountain. There really is one hiking trail and it's pretty rocky in places, but nothing technical. If you feeling lazy or the weather is less the ideal you can take the train to the top. You should plan about 2-3 hours to walk to the top. The trail is very obvious and easy to follow. There are no trees so if it's sunny take a hat and apply the sun screen. Since there are no trees it would be hard to get lost in a big wide open sheep pasture. The view is of the Welsh landscape. It's beautiful and worth the effort to go to the top. There is some good technical rock climbing in the snowdon area. I believe you can hire a guide from Plas Y Brenin to take you hiking and hill walking if you feel you can't do it on your own. The British Mountaineering Council would also be a good place to find a guide and info

  5. You don't need any experience to climb the popular route up Snowdon called the pig (pyg) track. It's just like walking up stairs. Unless you are quite unfit you wouldn't need to train at all. It's still tiring but not really hard for most people.

A man made path has been made just out of big rocks on the steep part to create big steps and the path is pretty clear so you won't get lost especially if you go on a nice day because the will be plenty of people to follow. Another route is the miners track which isn't much more difficult but the track is harder to follow so i recomend you stick to the popular pig track.

There are lots of nice views and on a clear day you can see for miles at the top.

When I last walked up it was in the middle of winter and was raining so as we got near to the top it became very cold and windy but if you go up in the summer it is fine. Still a little chilly at the top but nothing a jumper wouldn't cure. It takes maby about 1.5-2hours to get up and the same to get down, I can't really remember for sure tho.

    I hope this was helpful.
