I never make fun of truly disabled people, but I call my friends retarded, or "tards" all the time.

When I was a child I did... now I see the challenges they have to go thru just to survive and rue my earlier actions...

Unfortunately, I'll have to answer "yes"  Very young children seem to take no notice, but something happens when children are a bit older and the remarks can be devastating.  Hopefully, there are sensible adults who put a stop to this behavior.  Myself and a group of friends were stopped quickly when we voiced our displeasure about a handicapped girl joining our scout group.  We learned our "lesson" at least I'm sure that I did.

There is never any excuse for this type of behavior and quick response is needed.  For an adult who would do this, well this completely unacceptable.
