Has anyone lost tons of weight just cycling slow?

I was always someone who had to do everything to the max, and I realize that I can't do that anymore. I can't afford a gym membership, and I don't live in a good enough neighborhood to run the streets. I could get a treadmill, but I live on the third floor and I don't think the people below me would appreciate it. I do have a bike, however. It is very quiet. When I ran hardcore, I would get sick a lot because I overdid it. I'm just wondering, can I lose a lot of weight cycling on a bike at low intensity? This is just the way my circumstances are, and I want to see if anyone is successful doing this. Thanks!

  1. You have to burn mare calories than you take in to lose weight.

  2. Not an oz !  The ONLY way we can control our weight is to control what we eat and drink. That means going easy on the junk food, fast food, sweets, and sugary drinks.

And as said above, you must burn more than you take in.

  3. Weight loss is a matter of burning more calories than you eat.  It's that simple.  You will burn calories riding a bike slowly, but you will do much better to go at the optimum speed for you.  You should ride at a speed that makes you turn the pedals fast enough to get your heart rate to the right speed (50-70% max heart rate, I believe...but could be off a bit).  So that could be 12 mph at a cadence of around 70 or so for you, or it could be 20 mph at the same cadence.  It depends on your fitness level.

That said, cycling is one of the few sports that will allow you to burn of fmore calories at a higher speed.  Running burns off nearly the same amount of calories as walking (per mile) as running at even 8-10 mph doesn't increase wind resistance a whole bunch.  Riding at 20 mph is alot different than riding at 10, though.  And will burn off significantly more calories.

And don't forget the other half of the equation.  Watch what you eat!

  4. I am confused, first you say you can do something to the max and then you say you can't ?
