  1. Many people stay in the Air National Guard for the required 20 years+ I am guessing you are asking to see if is logical to do so? If so, than your answer would be yes. You learn a valuable trade and get the experience from that, and also get your schooling paid for. It also looks really good on resumes. Of course you would need another job to support you because you wouldn't be making much just from that, unless you went active guard which is basically active duty.

  2. You join the guard/reserves to serve your country not to make a career out of it, it's impossible. You're a weekend warrior and available to your country if you're needed. People in the guard/reserves either work a full or part time job or go to school.

  3. Absolutely.  You can make a career BY serving your country, which I think is a win-win situation!  I have a friend whose father was in the Air National Guard for about 25 years and retired as a Colonel.  The way it worked was during the week he was in the government civil service and then one week end a month and two weeks a year he would do the exact same job, with the same uniform in the same office.  He made very good money and apparently liked the work.

Then there were also people who did the part-time National Guard thing but were not full-time civil service employees.  If you are interested a good way to see if this is a career for you is to try out the National Guard and then see if this is a career path you would enjoy.  As a side benefit, if you are interested in college the Guard will probably help with that as well.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.
