I've been practicing punching a re breakable martial arts board for a while now and was wondering if anyone out there has been successful at doing the one-inch punch. I've seen clips on youtube describing how to do this but can't get the grasp of it. Can someone that has managed to do this is alot of force explain to me how this is done?

  1. you have to hold your hand 1 inch from the guy and then summon chi and then out of nowhere explode into chest with your knuckles, if done right his heart will stop instantly

  2. i dont believe in in this one inch or one centimetre punch etc.....by the way..whats the purpose of learning this??what does that have to do in self defence or real fight??please stop believing in martial arts bullshits ideology and get down to serious martial art training..

  3. You will need to study an internal style.  The power comes from your legs, is directed by your waist through your torso and out into the arms and hands.  To build the control and the timing to make that work takes some time and considerable practice.

  4. I can do it, I actually didn't use Wing Tsun technique to do it though, I used the explosive force of Xingyi with the concentrated and shocking power and drive of the legs from Taijiquan. Combine that with a little bit of technique on how to punch and it isn't that hard if you have experience in both styles.... it may be simpler for me though, because I've done so many push hand exercises, the legs, the waist, and chest action are second nature.

  5. Actually Aaron L - I don't believe Bruce Lee learned it from Wing Chun. I believe he learned it from Master Gin Foon Mark - Jook Lum Southern Preying Mantis.

Aside from two others, none of the answers above are correct. You can give me all the thumbs down you want. You are wrong.

If you have no real knowledge of what is being asked, don't answer.

Giving wrong info can get someone hurt.

  6. I would recommend looking for a school in your area that teaches Wing Chun.  This was Bruce Lee's first style and it was from this tradition that he came up with the concept of the "one inch punch."  It takes quite a lot of practice but the basic concepts include: 1) keeping your elbow as close to your center line as possible (center line runs perpendicular through your solar plexus and is imagined as a plane that is projected forward) 2) as you execute the punch, do not imagine pushing the fist forward but instead propel it forward using your elbow.  The fist is just an extension of that force.  3) As you begin to punch aim your fist slightly downward.  Upon contact you "snap" your fist upwards,  This adds force to the punch by essentially giving you two punches in one.

Your structure is very important but it won't be effective in breaking a board or whatever from a short distance unless you have developed strength in key muscles, particularly the muscles that connect your bottom two fingers (including the pinky) with your elbow.  In my class we practice this by doing pushups on our fist, and of course, practicing these punches on a daily basis.

What's the point?  Well Wing Chun is a "close range" fighting system and so it concentrates on how to generate as much force as possible in situations where you might not have the freedom to pull back your arm a good distance before striking.

  7. The trick is to use your shoulder to propel your arm forward.

Its not really a punch but more of a push.

Don't stop once you've hit the block, keep your hand moving forward.

I'd normally aim somewhere behind the block

Most of what I've said is applicable to punches in general

  8. its a trick to sell martial arts to gullible kids like you. Reality is so much more powerful and interesting than fantasy.

  9. well my sensay as mastered the technique and he's told me a little about it but hasn't really taught me it, but he did mention that alot of the power comes from turning you feet when you land it... don't know if it will be any help but that's only what he told me

  10. mortimer your a funny guy, WILL STOP THE HEART BEATING! lol.

theres no such thing as a 1 inch punch, its just more bruce lee legend bull. theres some vids on youtube of bruce lee demonstrating the 1 inch punch, what a load of bull it is, the guy hes punching is always standing straight on and off balence, my 4 year old could knock him over off balence the way he is.

my advise to you is to start concerntrating on some real techniques not myth bull like the 1 inch punch. good luck
