On many occasions.

François Rabelais (1494 - 1553) is a famous French writer.  I'm sure people met him.

A more recent famous person from Lyon is Maurice Herzog - mountaineer and conqueror of the mountain Annapurna.  I'm sure people met him too.

The people who met the above are too numerous to list.  But the two names are a good starting point.
