I would just love to bike all the way down to Playa de Carmen. I even have a friend who speaks a bit of spanish and would be good to go. How safe would it be if I avoided Mexico City?

  1. Not a real good idea Man ,Things have changed down there lately

I havent been in Old Mex in 5 yrs

  2. No I have not and I would not to much has happen to bikers down there and they never came back

  3. I rode all the way down Baha in the late '60's with no problem. If I did have a problem I didn't remember it as it was the '60's.

  4. I have, I went to Cabo San Lucas via Dallas. I would not take the trip anytime soon, it is very dangerous in Mexico now since the U.S. has closed the borders. There is a lot of crime towards  foreigners.

  5. You'd be fine. I've ridden all over Mexico without incident. I'm actually more afraid of the border area than I am areas south of there.

Just stick to the main highways, be prepared for some rough roads at times, and bring plenty of water, tools, and repair items. Plan out your route in advance, and even bring a GPS just in case (they do actually seem to work down there...).

I'd avoid Mexico City, anyway. Congestion, congestion, congestion. Plus, I think I left there with a nice layer of smog in my lungs.

**EDIT** - I haven't been down there in awhile (5-plus years). I spoke with a buddy of mine that lives in Big Bend Nat'l Park in TX, and travels through Mexico regularly. He states that it has indeed become pretty dangerous lately, and that if you DO decide to travel down there, make sure you have a good-size group. Biker4Life and others are correct, apparently.

  6. Can't go by me, I spent 2 weeks and 2 days in jail in ensenada last time I went, they kind of frown on firearms in Mexico, and I wouldn't go down there without one. Don't you read the paper or watch the news? Kidnapping and robbery has become a sport down there, 33 americans have been kidnapped or killed in the last 24 months, in fact the state dept. issued a travel advisory a month ago. Look into it if you are doubious my friend.
