Question:

Has anyone noticed a constant Winter Pattern across the US all summer?

Its just weird, all summer cold fronts have dropped down from the north and ridging has setup (usually switches from east to west and vise versa during the winter). This is the first time I ever remember seeing this pattern persist all summer. Do you think we are in for a cold winter?

  1. No...But we are in for a LOOONG Winter. I believe that the last year has shown a huge change in our seasons. The biggest thing to me is that the seasons and the months do not exactly fall together as they used too. in fact i think that they are slowly changing and moving off course from each other. in other words winter will be in spring..spring will be in summer....etc etc. If it does happen its gonna be pretty exciting.

  2. It is a rather unusual pattern, but not unheard of.  I remember the summer of 2000 was very similar, with a rather persistent trough in the east resulting in lots of unsettled weather.  What has been particularly unique about this summer though, is that despite the trough, temperatures in the east have remained above normal.  This is not because of a lot of heat waves, but because it has been very humid and overnight lows have been well above normal.

The current pattern, however, will not necessarily translate into the winter months.  There are many different atmospheric oscillations and indices which drive the weather, including but not limited to ENSO (El Nino), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Arctic Oscillation (AO).  Some of these things can change in the matter of weeks (NAO & AO) resulting in a rather quick switch in the sensible weather pattern.  This makes it hard to predict future weather patterns based on the current pattern.

I've heard some early indication from some experts that this winter won't be too bad.  It may begin a little earlier than normal (due to the current patter) but may moderate a bit towards mid-winter.

  3. yes its strange

  4. That is not happening where i live but i do believe it has been cooler that previous summers. This is because of global warming. Since the polar ice caps are melting into the ocean, there more cold (liquid) water and these cold fronts have to move somewhere because it is the ocean. because global warming leads to new temperatures in the ocean, the world is now seeing ridiculous weather patterns.

  5.    hey be careful what you say.gore will send his global warming stooges after you.you just think its cold.but dont say it out loud.shhh.

  6. it is turning cooler here this week....but i dont think that means we are going to have cold winter.....i think the seasons are becoming different, like everything is coming later than usual.  i dont like these changes....i remember when i was a kid...in the winter the snow was on the ground for four months and my bellbottoms would freeze solid while we were sled riding....lol, i just gave my age away

  7. No, and a coolish summer does NOT correspond to a cold winter. There is no correlation between the two.

  8. yes i have noticed it. you see i live in south carolina and usually the temps stay around 95 or above this time of year and useually this time of day its already ninty and its only about 75. the highs are supposed to be about 101 but today the high is only gona be 86.   i really hope we have a cold winter with lots of snow.
