  1. I worked for a supplier that sold fireplaces to Directbuy and I know for a fact that we sold at dealer cost.  There are certain items (electronics, for example) that have very little markup so you won't save a lot of money on those.  But furniture has a huge markup so you can buy quality furniture from DB for what you might pay at a discount store.  It is very expensive to join, but if you are planning to build, remodel, or redecorate a lot over the next 5 years, I think it is worth it.  I have a friend who built a new house, and she joined in order to buy her cabinetry, flooring, plumbing fixtures, lighting, etc.  She saved a ton of money in the long run.  You will save more than your membership, but ONLY if you are planning to spend a lot to begin with for a big project.

  2. I was under the impression that they called you to see if you would be interested in joining and then don't leave you alone once they get your number (that's what they did to me for a while).  Tread carefully...

  3. I joined the club for around 3500 about four years ago because they showed us a few items during our highly regulated tour that seemed to be a good price.  However, when you go to actually buy something, most items are priced above what I could buy them for at many other places.  There are very few bargains, or you find that the shipping costs added on to the item bring the price to at least as high as, or higher than, you would had to have paid otherwise.  I

  4. Never join this club!!!!  It is a total ripoff.  For some reason, everything takes 6 weeks delivery!  If you are a smart shopper, you can get the bargains, and you won't have to wait weeks! Also, you won't have to go through all their BS.  I bought a stove listed at $1,397 at Home Depot for $697 with tax, by waiting it out until it was the price I wanted to pay.  Same with my LG steam Washer.  List $1019, PP$527.00 delivered.

Also, just mention how much cheaper you can get it at Direct Buy, or another store, and you can get another mark down.

You have to pay about $3-5,000 to enroll.  Add that to the cost of your items and you have paid over and above what your furniture should have cost at a reasonable store.  All my friends who have joined try to defend their membership, but when you do the math, they are the losers.  Just add the cost of membership to the purchase price and you'll see what  I mean.

Furniture stores are really hurting now with the economy slowing down, and they are very eager to unload their merchandise.  Bargain with them, but be very pleasant about it.  It may take some time, but you could save thousands.  Just keep going back to look at the items, over a period of days, but don't make an instant comitment the first time.  They almost always have more in the back.

  5. Hey my parents recently had a tour and looked at getting a membership, the cost is $5000 for 3 years, and yes that's not a joke. It's hardly worth it if you're not going to buy more then once in that time. The discount price is great, they do have good selection. My parents went to the 1 in Mississauga on Ridgeway, also if I remember correctly the discount is 35% or so.

They are weird about membership, it's a very exclusive event (the tour/meet) and only my parents were allowed to go. They had to meet a specific person who showed them around.
