wow.. ive had alot of medical problems the past 6 months. ive pretty much had to play my own doctor in finding out whats wrong with me. ive always been a little over weight. but ive always been active as well. i dont sit and watch tv. im always up doing something. and im on my feet at work busy 10 hours a day. everyone kept saying i got diabetes cause of my weight and poor eating. im starting not to think so.

i was on the depo birthcontrol for 8 years. when i stopped is when i started to have problems. depo causes weight gain. also im being checked today for a couple of hormone related conditions such as pcos. all hormone related conditions seem to have weight gain issues as well. even conditions such as pcos have diabetes as a main concern! its wierd that diabetes is tied to soo many health conditions.

then as a chain reaction i see a pattern. when i go to the doctor now everytime they say my blood pressure is a little high. ive never had blood pressure issues until i had diabetes. then i see alot of diabetes patients are on blood pressure meds..

so i go from medication that causes diabetes.. then diabetes to high blood pressure. geshhh!!

  1. I like Gary's answer even though some drugs may cause a shift in insulin levels and a resulting shift in blood glucose. I dislike his assertion that the blood levels need to come down fast. The damage of diabetes comes from elevated insulin (type 2 only) and not from moderately high glucose. Of course blood glucose over 200 or 300 needs to come down, fast. Type 2 is all about insulin. Excess insulin causes most of the damage. Diabetes causes heart disease not the other way around.

  2. Gary is wrong.   YES. Diabetes can be from taking certain drugs for long periods of time.  Many blood pressure meds, corticosteroids, cancer drugs, birth control, just to mention a very few.  It can also develop when a person is exposed to hazardous chemicals.  These drugs can, after long term use, actually damage the pancreas.  Many of them do only slight damage, but it is enough to cause type 2 diabetes to develop.  Diabetes is NOT caused from being overweight, having a bad diet, or sitting on the couch. Type 2 can Cause weight gain itself, but being overweight is not a cause of type 2 diabetes.  Many diabetics do have high blood pressure, but many don't. I have been diabetic for 16 years and my blood pressure is the same as it has been all my life...80/60.  It has never gone higher , except for a tad higher from exercise, which is totally normal, then it goes back down.  If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, go to some diabetic ed classes.  You will learn a lot and can ask questions.

  3. There are many drugs that are directly asscociated with the cause of type two diabetes.  The list is long, the answer above has provided a short list of them.  Yes hazardous chemicals can be blamed at times, too.  Also injury to the pancreas it self from some sort of accident, or a disease that damages it.  Diabetes does not cause high blood pressure or high cholesterol in all cases.  Much of the time it can be diet related or even genetic.  Many diabetics do not have either.  It can be controlled by medication and diet.

  4. FIRST OFF -- Diabetes CAUSES high blood pressure.

    The extra sugar in your system attaches itself to the red blood cells, like little crystals.  These "crystals" acts like little knives, hacking and slashing the blood vessels as the red blood cells run through them.  This is especially true in the capillaries (the vessels that connect arteries and veins) which are no large than a red blood cell anyway.

    The result of all this hacking and slashing is micro-clots and scar tissue. These partially block the blood flow, thus increasing blood pressure.

    SECOND OFF -- Most diabetics also have high choesterol. Again, this is caused by diabetes.  And high cholesterol causes "hardening of the arteries" -- which causes high blood pressure.

    So, that fact is, diabetes never killed anyone -- it is the side effects that do the damage. Most diabetics die from circulation problems -- heart attacks, pulmonary thrombosis (blood clot in the lung), or stroke.

    This "knifing" action also damages the kidneys.  Kidney damage and dialysis is very common in diabetics.

    BUT . . .diabetes is never "caused" by medication or disease.  You first have to have the "predisposition" to become diabetic, then the medicine or disease aggravates the condition.

    In your case, it would appear that your body is very sensitive to even the slightest bit of additional weight.  You were probably very close to developing diabetes "naturally", and these medications set it off.

    In this case, the easiest treatment is to watch your diest EXACTLY and get more exercise -- with the goal of losing weight.  Since we KNOW that hormone conditions will cause a weight gain, and you seem to have e "predisposition" toward Type 2 Diabetes, then YOU have to be extremely diligent in taking off and keeping off the weight.

    In the mean time, the doctor can prescribe certain oral medication that will help reduce the blood sugars.

    But current philosophy is that blood sugars need to go down FAST!  So many doctors are now recommending insulin treatments (shots) to bring the sugars down immediately, with the goal of eliminating the insulin when weight approaches normal.

    NOTE: Diabetes tied to sooo many health conditions?  Like:

    High blood pressure

    -->Heart Attack

    -->Stroke

    -->Blindness

    -->Death

    High Cholesterol

    -->Heart Attack

    -->Stroke

    -->Alzheimers Disease

    -->Death

    Thrombosis

    -->Death

    Kidney Damage

    -->Dialysis

    -->Transplant

    -->Death

    Neuropathy

    --->Tingle and pain in fingers and toes

    -->Digestive problems like constiopation or diarhea

    --->Sexual performance problems

    --->Blindess

    Inability to heal properly

    -->Gangrene

    -->Amputation of finger, toes, feet, legs, hands, arms

    -->Skin Diseases

    -->Death

    WEIRD???  no . . . . .
