I was wondering if there are real people who get off drugs and alcohol for good. If so, were any relationships restored as a result?

  1. ive been a recovering alcoholic for almost 2 yrs now.

2 yrs ago,..I lost EVERYTHING!  I had to focus on myself on getting better.  I had to do it for myself, not just to restore broken relationships.

Because i focused on myself, on getting better, i gained relationships that are healthy for me.  Ive gained friendships back....i got my family back.

I did however, have to leave a few behind because they were not healthy for me, nor were my true friends.  That goes with boyfriend/girlfriend relationships.

It did take me to loose everything...not just material things, but, my family and loved ones.  Thats when i woke up.  During my 3rd month of recovery, i was diagnosed with MS.  I was PISSED!  I wanted to drink so badly, just to show god whos boss.  Well, i didnt, and hes the boss.

my life is so much happier without the alcohol, drama, and everything else that goes with it.  It is possible to get clean....your talking to someone who never, ever thought that would be possible.

  2. sure, it happens all the time.  for some serious drugs like heroin the person may need to take perscription medications for decades to function normally.

  3. Yes. I have almost 14 months clean. I did a lot of drugs for about 9 years. At the end of my addiction, I was shooting heroin and crack.  It wasn't pretty. I'm so grateful to be alive and clean and happy.

I have relationships that are being mended, some that are not. I do a lot of work on myself. I go to NA meetings, I go to professional therapy too. I had to do a lot more than just put the drugs down. I had to take an honest look at myself and slowly make changes. It took awhile to get some trust back from some people but it is happening. Everything just keeps getting better and better.

If you are having questions about anything, go to www.na.org and do a meeting search for a meeting near you. You can go there and there will be people there willing to help you out and answer any questions you have.

And to the person Andy I think it was....I was a heroin addict and I don't need any medicine to function normally. Not everyone needs medicine. It is possible to put the drugs down and make your life so much better with out just substituting to a prescription from a doctor.

And relapse isn't a requirement. Does it happen, yes. Does it have to, no. I know a lot of people who haven't relapsed. My sponsor has never relapsed, and other people in my support network haven't either. I did once. Everyone's process and path is different.

  4. Almost everyone that's done drugs or alcohol will most likely relapse at least once. And of course, you can become sober and clean for good. And yes indeed relationships become better if you are. Drugs and alcohol don't only affect you, but it affects the people around you too.
