Is it truly, positively worth it?

I'm on page 900 now, and it's going really slow. So my question is, should I continue with the read, or should I put it down and opt for something else?

  1. i say opt for something else.  this book assumes that the reader has a working knowledge of the culture and time in which it's set....  at least that's how i feel.  i want to enjoy this novel too, but i feel really left out.  the upside is that i've researched indian culture and the liberation from english rule. i've also been equally intrigued and disgusted by what i've learned about the caste system.  with a little bit of history under my belt, i might give this book a second chance.
