  1. The Oedipus Rex is like a Greek love story if you like love stories you might like it. I'm not into that kind of reading I am more into adventure: Epic of Gilgamesh.

  2. isn't that just the tale of oedipus remixed?

  3. If you can read greek

  4. Yes.  Reading a translated play can be "interesting" - sometimes the text does not make as much sense as it should.  If you hit an odd spot -- I'd recommend reading it aloud to yourself.  That sounds stupid but it really works to get the actual meaning across.

  5. Clearly you havnt even looked at it?

You will usually find the Attic Drama Oedipus Rex in books on the Theban plays of Sophocles.

Go to the library and look for it. Translations and bilingual texts will be in the Classics area. You might want to also borrow a couple of mythology books for background and be aware there will be more than one translation.

Even if you have been asked to read only one set text you might want to read a different translation as well.

    Is it an easy read?

You get to read it in Englsih and dont have to learn Attic Greek first!

It's one of the great Classics - read it!

  6. It's not a book, it's a play by the great playwright of ancient Greece, Sophocles.

I was a drama major for a while and I read a lot of plays. I read them in translation, of course, as I'm assuming you will be.  There are different translations and some are much easier to read than others.

You could probably find the -story- of Oedipus Rex on the Internet somewhere, or in Cliff Notes or something.  Plays are not easy to read, like a novel.

What we used to do to read plays is to get together in small groups and read them aloud, with one person taking each part.  This makes the play make more sense because each character has a different voice.  If you have a good imagination you can visualize all the sets and costumes and stuff (of course ancient Greek plays didn't have sets and costumes).  In a couple of hours you can get through a play (Shakespeare takes longer).

Want me to tell you the story?

  7. yep, just read it for english summer reading. it's pretty short and understandable.
