Question:

Has anyone seen a rear view mirror for a bicycle helmet?

yesterday i was on the bus and i looked out the window to see a man with a rear view mirror clipped right onto his helmet. it was clipped on there with one of those little alligator clips which attached to a metal bar the size of a pen, to a small circular mirror about 2 inches in diameter.

it appeared as if it could have just as easily been attached to a baseball cap. if anyone has seen these, or know what stores carry them, or if someone could find a link to somewhere who sells them online. i couldnt imagine them being more than $10 though.

  1. I agree with agb90's post.

If given a choice of bar mounted mirror or no mirror at all, I'd go without the mirror.  With the helmet mounted variety, you aren't forced to look down or away; your glance away from the road in front of you is minimal to nonexistant.

I've yet to hear of someone getting their eye punctured by the helmet/eyeglass mirror.  In a crash, what is the likelihood of the mirror stem bending around and sticking you in the eye?  Really?

  2. I've ridden with a helmet mounted mirror for at least 10 years. They are much better than a bar-end mirror since they can be aimed where you want and (arguably) bounce less. Also if you have more than one bike -- like I do -- a helmet mirror saves having to buy multiple mirrors.  I suppose there is a theoretical possibility of eye injury ... but I've never heard of one and personally feel the advantages far outweigh any small risk.

See the link for a good overview of cycling mirrors.

  3. I have a mirror on my road bike handlebars and I wouldn't ride without it nowadays. It's better to have one fixed to your handlebars rather than one attached to your helmet.

  4. You can get them just about anywhere, but I won't provide a link because I think they're a bad idea.

Why?   Do you really want a sharp stick that close to your eye in a crash?

  5. They are worn by lots of oddballs........why not get two and really make a statement.........
