When we got there, we gave them a credit card to pay for the reseveration. After they charged us, they said that they didn't have a room for us due to renovation. Instead, they wanted to put us in another room, in another hotel. In addition to this, they would not give us a discount. We went to look at the other room, it was really small & looked cramped. Not only that but, we later found out that it was a hostel costing 30 euro per night. This was 110 euro less than they wanted us to pay. My friend got angry and complained. The staff at marco polo said that we would not able to find another hotel in rome during the busy tourist season. It only took her a couple of tries to find another one. We ended up staying at Hotel Marghera instead. The staff were so much nicer & more honest there.

  1. Hello,

Unfortunately, hotels pull this scam a lot.  It is usually smaller family run hotels that do this.  They will book you a room knowing they don't have enough room for you and then shuttle you off to another, not as nice hotel and charge you the same price.  The only thing you can do is to try to find another room and make sure you cancel the charge to your card.  I would suggest contacting your credit card company and telling them what happened.  Make sure the charges were reversed and if it hasn't shown up yet then dispute the charge. Any paperwork or emails you can give them will help with this.  Also, go to websites like virtualtourist.com and tripadvisor.com and post cautions about this hotel for others to see and be aware of.  A lot of time this is the only way we can get real feedback about what a hotel is really like.
