Has anyone stayed at "Ana y Jose" in Tulum , or anyone have any suggestions on where to stay (or not to stay!

I used to go to Ana y Jose's in Tulum all the time.

It was, at one point, literally a small handful of individual "huts" on the beach with a central "restaurant" ... the whole thing was powered by a generator and lights-out was at 9pm no matter what.  More recently, perhaps as a result of their success, Ana y Jose have upgraded to what has become a pretty nice little hotel ... same spot on the beach and all, but whereas it was $35/night back in the day, it's a lot more than that now.  Great spot on the beach, nice people ... we always rented a VW Bug in Cancun and drove ourselves down.  If you continue south from Ana y Jose's to Punta Allen (the road is not always passable in a Bug) you'll find a really cool fishing village, on the bay side you can wade in to go fishing on your own.  Tulum is a cool spot -- just take your time and stay away from the man at the lighthouse -- seriously !!
