Question:

Has anyone successfully sold a timeshare?

We still owe a bunch of money on a time share, but considered taking a huge hit and just selling for half of its worth. If not less.

But after researching it looks like you practically can't give them away. Has anyone had any success selling their timeshare? Where did you advertise?

Thanks!

  1. We tried to sell a $20,000 (original price) timeshare.  It had only $2,000 cash value.  When we put up a For Sale sign at the mailbox and the community bulletin board, the developer agreed to pay $8,000 so we would take our ads down.  The fine print of the original sale agreement said that they had the first right to buy our place if we ever sold.  I didn't remember that.

  2. Time shares can be and are a pain and a waste of money. I feel your pain. It can be sold, but they are going to sell for either the amount you presumably owe and not what you actually paid for it. People need to research before getting caught up in this scam. Advertise everywhere, there are a ton of free websites that you can utilize. Try craigslist for starters, ebay etc. Good luck to you.

  3. i agree 100% with the first answer but for "craigslist"

all over "craigslist" is warning of scams.

i tried to sell a car on "craigslist" and received 3 forged/fake checks.

my bank was furious with me..and i was elbow deep in police reports.

if you look on ebay you will see that people are giving away time shares starting at $1

    sorry i feel for you.

the last time share i bought I got a refund..(yep i bought more than once) but the last and final time..i bought timeshares i got a refund.

I got the refund by keeping my records.  The first time I booked to use the time share (and i travel off season or low season use) and was told okey.. (dec.1 to go Florida and return dec.10 all off season) and was told no problem.  I was thrilled.   I got a phone call 24 hours later that no openings. Florida was closed (hurricane Ralph or something).   Well I paid for my airfare so i went.  I had no hotel booked but I had paid my airfare so I went.  My first stop when I went to Florida was the "timeshare property" and it was just waiting for arrivals and gave me a booking which i paid for one night and kept all my receipts.

I now had proof of my first lie.   This happened a second time for a weekend in Las Vegas so I now did the exact same as the first time.  The events were precisely the same for Las Vegas.   I now had two receipts.   I then started the process for the refund.  This was all off season low season travel.  The timeshare properties were available and I was refused two times.

I just simply kept my original receipts and sent copies to the operators of the time share and I got my refund.  I did have to threated with notice of "fraud".  I had documents to prove the times were available.

  4. Timeshares can be sold but the resale value is terrible, if yours is a good one  (location, season, size of unit, etc.) then it is easier but it will never sell for half of what you paid for.  The average prize that I have seen them been sold is for no more than $2000, and this is for completely paid off timeshares.

There are so many options out there and you are right several owners would just give them away, that it will be almost impossible for you to find someone to take over your payments or give you a good amount for it.

You might want to talk to your accountant about defaulting on the payments.

    These are some options:

    - Resale is most likely not an option unless you sell it to a friend or relative.

    - BE VERY CAREFUL if someone offers to sale it for you and ask for money upfront, they are just a bunch of scammers.

    - It is ok to pay a few dollars (no more that $30) to post an ad in some really good site. There are some FREE sites that you can advertise, and my advise is that you just give it away and let someone take over your payments, you can try these:

    http://timeshareownerscommunity.com/

    http://tug2.net/

    http://craigslist.com

    http://ebay.com

    http://recycler.com/

    http://usfreeads.com/

    http://www.inetgiant.com/

    - Another alternative is donation, some charities take these timeshares.  You can see a list of them here:

    http://timeshareownerscommunity.com/Char...

    - The last is the more painful, talk to your accountant about bankruptcy or just defaulting on the loan.

    Good Luck!

  5. Very common problem, as you are finding out majority of timeshares are almost impossible to sell meanwhile the yearly maintenance fees continue and increase that said in the end your only recourse to get out from under the maintenance fees is to give it away
