The trip sounds cool, snorkeling in the caves but I'm not to sure about the bats. Do they bother you?

  1. We were in the Yucatan in March and swam in one at Valladolid. This town is about 50 miles from Cancun on the highway to Merida.

You climb down about 100 feet or so into some very humid air. This cenote had an opening in the middle of the roof in which a tree's roots came all the way down from the ceiling to the water. There was about 6 feet of opening by the tree and this permitted light to shine down on the water. Very nice effect on the water and in the cavern. The cavern was probably about 300 feet across.

We were there about 9 in the morning and I saw a couple of bats going into the cave. They aren't the type that bother you and I imagine they swarm out of the cave in the evening and return at sunrise.

  2. I went to a couple last year. To be honest, I wouldn't be able to tell you if there were bats (which means they definately didn't bother us), because of the beauty of the place. I definately saw some birds though.

In one of the nicest trips I've taken I can certainly say that the cenotes were the nicest thing I saw in Cancun. It was just beautiful, amazing to see the sunshine reflecting on the blue waters underground. Go for it, you won't regret it!
