  1. Good advice above, we always let our kids stay up before we took off on a trip, they thought it was special getting to stay up and they slept a good deal of the journey.

I thi9nk you will find it better than traveling by auto and certainly better than by bus or air where they cant move about as much.

Eleven hours is still a good long time but the adventure and excitement should make it an enjoyable journey.

Get up with them and walk around a bit if they get restless, that is a luxury you cant do on any other type of overland journey.

    Enjoy your trip!!

  2. OMG. Good luck. I was about 15 and we traveled all over for dance competitions. The little ones drove me nuts in about 2 hours. I wound up riding in the smoking car the whole time because kids weren't allowed. Might be different if they are your kids but that was h**l for me.

  3. don't let them sleep before you go, they'll sleep on the train and think its brilliant when they wake up somewhere else.  take plenty of pens paper etc. find out about paces of interest along the way to point out and tell stories about, wikipedia is good for this. play travel ggames such as the alphabet game, ai spy with my little eye (you can do colours instead of letters if your children are small}.

  4. Tire 'em out before the trip and they will sleep on the train. Sleeping on the train is NOT hard to do, on AMTRAK, the seats are larger than airplane seats and very comfortable. They are almost as big as my recliner at home!

Just to be safe, bring your own pillow and blanket. Even if the train is running low, you're set! (And you don't know who or what used that blanket the last time!)
