Question:

Has anyone traveled to Mexico while 22-26 weeks pregnant?

I know the second trimester is the safest time to travel and I also know all of the rules about not drinking the water and moving around while flying and all that. My doc went over a few of them with me over the phone. I was just wondering if anyone has had a personal experience with Cancun while pregnant and had any additional advice?

  1. I've traveled in Mexico during the second trimester of my current pregnancy and my last pregnancy two years ago and everything went well. Cancun is very well developed, so it'll be much like being in the states.

If you want to be extra cautious about avoiding getting sick, I would avoid salads and other raw produce, unless it has a skin that you don't eat. In other words, bananas and other fruit that you peel are fine. Cooked or peeled vegetables are fine. But I've had some bad luck with lettuce. And I'm sure you heard about the recent salmonella outbreaks traced to raw jalapeno peppers and raw green onions.

But don't worry too much. You'll find plenty of good things to eat there.

Also, bring a good mosquito repellent. You don't really need it much during the day, but if you're out at dusk, you'll want it.

If you happen to be flying on Mexicana or AeroMexico, they might ask you to sign a waiver if they notice that you're pregnant. You don't need a doctor's note or anything at this point.

Overall, don't worry too much and enjoy your pre-baby vacation.

If you run into any concerns while you're there, it should be pretty easy to find an English-speaking doctor. Ask you hotel for a recommended doctor - some even keep a doctor on call.
