Question:

Has anyone tried adding activated carbon to cat litter to control odor?

I just saw something on TV about how activated carbon/charcoal absorbs odors better than baking soda, and I know that Everclean adds the carbon to their litter already. Has anyone used this brand? Does it actually control odor better than others? If you have added the activated carbon yourself to another brand, did you just buy the same product that is generally sold for aquariums?

  1. I would be concerned the aquarium type would track all over the house and it would be better to use a product with the activated charcoal incorporated into the litter itself.

I use a silicone bead litter and have found that to be an excellent product and I have no odor problems.

  2. Yes, I am a big fan of activated carbon.  I started using a product called Fridge-It odor absorbers for really smelly fridge and it worked fantastic.  So I started using it for my 2 cat litter boxes that also had an ongoing odor problem.  Just clipped it onto side of litter box and it worked fantastic.   I understand that activated carbon is a lot different than other charcoal and carbon products and that the little pieces of carbon in some litters are just not as good.  I've tried some of them and really doesn't work very well.  So, go get a few of those Fridge It activated carbon odor absorbers. - little purple cube - don't waste money on the imitations. Totally unscented so it actually eliminates odor rather than covering up with some nasty fragrance and totally safe to use.

You can buy these in kitchen gadget stores or just go direct which is what I do - contact them at customerservice@innofresh.com and ask for order form. You get it right away.

Definitely the way to go. try it.

    Good luck

  5. I agree with Jen.  I use Fridge IT odor absorbers on my litter box and it works really well.  The activated carbon filter is terrific.

Not expensive, convenient, safe and totally unscented which I like.  I also recommend this product.
