Thanks everyone, just trying to get as many opinions as possible.

I will either get Mirena or Paragard.

What are your experiences?

  1. I have a Mirena.  I love it.  It is awesome.  I have only had one period in 2+ years.  Insertion really sucked but it is totally worth it. I highly recommend it.

  2. I love my IUD.  I have the Paraguard because I wanted to avoid hormones (due to family history of problems with blood clots, etc).  I was warned that the Paraguard would make my periods heavier and my cramps more severe . . . this did turn out to be true, but I'd do it again!   If you don't have any contraindications to hormone-based birth control, the Mirena is better because it will help you to have shorter, lighter periods.

  3. I did TONS of research before I decided to get my Paraguard copper IUD, and I really think, so far that I have made the right decision. I have only had it three weeks, but I am thrilled about the idea of NO HORMONES. I am currently waiting for my last  Depo shot to wear off and I got the copper IUD because I knew that there was NO possibility of having the same stupid side effects I had with hormonal BC, I get headaches every day, have no s*x drive and am an irritable ***** most of the time. The only good things about it were that I didn't gain weight and didn't get pregnant. I knew that if I got a Mirena, even though the doctors say it isn't true, I knew that I would probably suffer the same side effects since it has the same hormones in it as the shot. But some women love it and don't gain any weight or have any issues with it at all, but some women react the same way they do to other hormonal BC methods, so I was willing to deal with longer, heavier more painful periods over having to deal with the side effects of hormones. Here is a really good IUD site with lots of personal experience stories and it really helped me in deciding to get one, everyone is different and some people DO LOVE the Mirena, it just wasn't for me.
