I was told this tip on yahoo yesterday about natural pumpkin from a can ( not the pie filling ) that can be given to my dog to help cure her diahrea. It's supposed to work really well. I just want to know if anyone else has tried this before I go out and buy a can - my dog ate lots of cat food by accident :-), she's fine though and not acting sick ay all, just has runny p**p - she's drinking lots of water too :-) Thanks guys !

  1. I was told this tip too when my dog was a puppy to treat an upset stomach. I did give him fresh pumpkin and it did not do any harm.

She has diarrhea because she is eating food she is not used to eating and not just because it's cat food. You would ordinarily introduce new food bit by bit to get the dogs tum used to it to avoid diarrhea, but as this was an accident it's not possible. The dog will be alright with or without the pumpkin.

  2. I always have a can of pumpkin on hand even though I don't use it that often. It does work, won't hurt your dog, try it.

  3. The cat food was too rich for her as you have seen.Yes, the pumpkin does help to solid up the stool. She should get over this in a day or two though since the food will be out of her system. If it continues you may need to have her checked out by the vet.Added:

Tip 75 - Pumpkin for cats - pumpkin for dogs - Pumpkin for diarrhea or constipation

If your dog or cat is having the occasional case of constipation or diarrhea, one of the things that might help is canned pumpkin. Yes canned pumpkin in its pureed form (NOT pumpkin pie filling) is a fantastic stool softener which makes it a good natural remedy for constipation. It often helps with upset stomach or indigestion for both cats and dogs. It is very rich in fibre and adding just one or two teaspoonfuls to your pet's food often gets the system moving in no time. Dogs will occasionally want to eat it directly and that's fine too. Sometimes though, finicky cats and dogs won't touch it no matter what you do.

On the opposite end of things is diarrhea. Since the dietary fibre in canned pumpkin absorbs water, it can be a great help to a cat or dog that has diarrhea. Some pet owners report that it firms up their pet's loose stools or diarrhea within a few hours. Again one to two teaspoonfuls is all that is needed.

N.B. It should be noted that both diarrhea and constipation can both be very serious and require immediate veterinary care depending on the cause. Whatever the cause, diarrhea or constipation lasting more than 24-36 hours requires vet care. © Pets.ca 2007

  4. Canned pumpkin is for dogs that eat their stool NOT for diahrrea! If she has the water poops then skip a  meal and in the next feeding give 1/2 portion then the next feeding after that give a normal portion of dog food. By then she should be pooped out.

  5. Yes, plain canned pumpkin works to help with both diarrhea and constipation. Just make sure you get plain, canned pumpkin.

  6. NO NO NO .. Pumpkin filling is not for diarrhea it is used for constipation.  How do I know?  I had this conversation w/ my vet about a week ago.

Just keep your dog in an isolated area till the cat food leaves her body and her stool is back to normal.  She'll be fine.

    Good Luck

  7. Umm, fiber helps move things along QUICKER. I wouldn't recommend it for a dog with diarrhea. Pumpkin would help if the dog was constipated.

  8. Yes...pumpkin is straight fiber so you only need to adda table soon to the food for a couple of days. Will also help dogs that have trouble expressing their anal glands

  9. Good she's drinking water so she won't become dehydrated and, yes, pumpkin is prescribed to help with the diarrhea (despite what someone has said the vet. told them).
