Has anyone tried out Pic Skates?

I ordered a pair of Pic Skates a few days ago since I'm taking a month off skating (I'm going on vaca to BALI!). I read some reviews, watched some videos and learned about how they work. They seem useful and definately helpful for off ice training. Has anyone tried out the Pic Skate? Is it good?

  1. It seems Pic Skates would be the closest "skates" for figure skating off the ice.  I've debated for years (uh, still debating) whether to get them or not.  We have plenty of rinks here, but with "life" I cannot just go skate.  I've seen the videos too . . . and it seems you can do "most" ice skating moves on them.

I tried them once when the company came out to the rink to demo their product.  We were wheeling around in the ballet room on the mats!  To me, it felt slower than the ice . . . but of course - that's the nature with thick wheels against a non slick surface - you deal with friction.  The boot part felt fine, but the wheel/frame felt clunky . . . but of course - the wheels and what holds them have more mass than just a slim "blade".  I did a spin entrance and oh I totally fell over . . . I think spin techniques may be a bit different from ice skating.

If I were to get Pic Skates, I would get another pair of boots in the same brand/model and size as my ice skates and just get the correct frame for them.  Back then they had not worked out my size yet . . . the frame/wheel length was not anywhere near my ice skate blade size (too long or too short).

I personally don't know anyone who cross trains with the Pic Skates, but hey, maybe it will work out for you.  I generally don't recommend "rollerblades" for skaters who are already training to skate . . . but these "artistic" skates are closer to figure skates at least.  I think you might have to have the mindset that you can do many of the figure skating moves off the ice . . . but the technique for some moves may be quite different . . . that can either help or hinder your ice skating.  Remember these are similar to ice skates, but not exact . . . so it may take some getting used to.  You'll just have to feel it out.

Hope it works out for you when you get them!!  And have fun in Bali!!  :)
