they look like ramen noodles (they also have a thicker/wider noodle) and are sold at my store in the produce section with the tofu/fake lunch meats... are they yummy? i've been wanting to get them but am quite unsure about whether they will taste good or not... don't get me wrong-- i love tofu, and i LOVE ramen noodles, but... i still am not brave enough ;)

give me your opinions, please, sensei (if you have tried them)... and if they ARE in fact the yumminess, please give me some good broth ideas for them...

thank you

  1. If you get them RINSE them well under cold running water.

I like them, but they are basically tasteless. I've used them in soups, stir-frys & as pasta with pasta sauce.

I make a Veggie Broth, add light steamed veggies pour over the noodles.. yummy & quite filling in a nice Low Fat, Low Cal way.

  2. I eat them all the time.  My boyfriend's favourite Chinese grocery often has them on sale for 2/$3.

I personally like the fettuccini shaped ones.  They taste very much like regular 'Italian' pasta, but are slightly more white and opaque, and a bit more chewy.  You can't tell much of a difference.  They smell like fish straight out of the pack, but once they're boiled and drained, the boiling water gets rid of all the smell.  I find they're good with all regular pasta sauces, but not suitable for Asian sauces.

I often eat them with tomato sauce and fake 'meat'balls, or cheesy sauces.

I've also tried traditional shirataki noodles, and they're even lower cal - they're more labour-intensive, though, because I find them too chewy unless I pan fry them before using them.  They're delicious with all Asian-y sauces.
