Has anyone used JSTOR?

I frequently get JSTOR articles in response to my Internet searches and would like to know about the site from anyone who has used it. I am doing research entirely on my own and cannot currently access JSTOR.

  1. JSTOR is an online collection of thousands of journal articles, dating from the late 1800s up to a few years ago. I use it all the time through my university. Access to JSTOR is by subscription only, but your local library may have one. Both the Boston and Cambridge Public Libraries do, and I can even get access from home if I go through their websites with my library card. You should check if your library offers a similar program. If not, do you have any friends at college? If they're willing to give you their access code, you can sign in that way.

If there's anything else you want to know, just edit your question and I'll try to answer.

Edited to add: yep, they'll take anyone's money, as long as you have a credit card.

  2. Yes, I have, but I had to pay for the article I wanted.  I appreciate your  frustration about not being able to access this website!  I have frequently come across JSTOR articles for research I have been doing.  They are topnotch, but unless you have privileges at a library that has privileges with JSTOR, you (we) are out of luck.

There is a movement afoot to change this, but I don't have any information about how soon it will be public.

By the way, I believe I paid $9 for the article I needed--not terribly pricey for the one, but those charges would mount up fast.  So I try to find alternative resources until the day....
