Does it work? It's $0.50 a square foot, which is fine if it actually works.

  1. I don't know about Sears, but I use Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to clean my tile and grout.  Before you call Sears, give it a try - it'll only cost you a couple of bucks.

  2. Good question.  It depends on how dirty it is.  Personally, I'd pay the .50/s.f. to have it done.  It's a lot of work, and if someone has an extractor, it takes them no time and it will look great.  Just seal it afterwards, to keep it looking good.

    Now, here's the process:

Degrease the grout first, using an alkaline cleaner, a prepared product from a tile store is good.  Alkaline is like bleach, it will be below 7 on the pH scale.  If not available, combine 1 part bleach, 3 parts water, and a squirt of laundry (not dish) detergent.  Test either one of these solutions in a small area first if grout is colored, to ensure that it won't blotch the grout or otherwise ruin it -- let it sit on tile/grout for 30 minutes in inconspicous place, then scrub/rinse.  If it looks okay, proceed to next steps.

Rent a floor scrubber, or use a brush/toothbrush on hands/knees, and scrub the **** out of it.  Rinse well.  Let dry overnight.  Next day, mix one part vinegar to one part water, and repeat process, or purchase an acidic cleaner at a tile store and follow directions.  This is an acid wash that will brighten the grout -- test first, like before.  Then buy a grout sealer (anything is fine, really), and seal the grout after it dries out, 2-3 days later.  Voila!
