My mom and I are going on a cruise this September. We are going to the Western Carribbean. How much can I expect to pay per minute and will I even get service?

We are spending 4 days at sea. And 3 days at ports.

  1. My family & I were on a Carnival Cruise a year ago.  You will be able to use the cell phones (and internet) as most cruise ships have been wired for that purpose.  Once off board, the cell phones will still work thru the local cell systems.  If you call from the ship's phones, it will be expensive.  On one of our tours, there was a couple who called home every bus stop we made, every time they could snap a cell phone picture and send it, etc.  The only island where there was a problem was Aruba (which is a bit behind the modern day power curve).

  2. You may want to check with your carrier to see if they provide service on the islands you will be visiting. While out to sea, you won't have cell service.

The Cruise lines does offer Internet service, but it's pretty expensive, a fee for logging on then a per minute fee from there.

As a mom of four teen age girls (2 are mine, 2 step), I'm telling my girls to forget the e-mails and phones for one week, it won't kill you and the world won't end if you don't call, text or e-mail your friends for a week. Besides, you'll be having way too much fun to even think about using your phone!

Again, forget about the phone for a week and enjoy your time with your mom. You never know when you'll have this chance again.

  3. You only get service when you are docked at port... you never get service at sea.

I don't know how much more you will be charged for roaming in the Carribbeanjust depends on what service and plan you have.

Hope you have a good Cruise! =)
