Has anyone used an SDS+ drill bit in a standard chuck? Did it work?

I think I know what I'll do now.

I'm going to buy the SDS+ drill bit I need. Found one for £13 (22mm diameter, 1m long) and I'll just hire an SDS drill for a day at £20.

Expensive hole but I need it.

  1. just get a standard masonry bit. Unless your standard drill has a hammer setting

  2. An SDS(special drive system) drill bit should not be used in any other chuck, as they will wobble about and could snap under pressure.

In Effect dont even try it!

  3. It can be done but you have to be careful that the chuck jaws do not fall in one of the grooves.

However if the drill slips round in the chuck it will become loose and could be dangerous

  4. I know you've got the job done but for future reference you can actually buy a SDS adaptor chuck. Drill bit fits in SDS chuck and then chuck fits into normal straight shank chuck.

  5. Yes, but i wouldn't risk buying one as they are expensive. Besides, if you need and sds drill bit in the first place, it's unlikely your standard drill will be up to the job.
