Before the current Ping Eye 2 controversy, golf has experienced similar situations. In August 1977, the grooves on the clubs used by Tom Watson to win both the Open Championship at Turnberry and that year's Masters were tested by the PGA Tour and found to be illegal, in that the grooves on the clubs failed to meet specifications the PGA's specifications. Nevertheless, Watson's victory was allowed to stand, since the PGA decided that "there was no effort on Watson's part to alter the clubs" - indeed, Watson had bought the clubs to the PGA for them to check.
