  1. The catacombs are a group of old passageways and tunnels that were used to deposit the bones from a variety of cemetaries that were emptied out to make way for new construction and for sanitary reasons beginning in the 18th century.

The official title is "les carrières de Paris" or "the quarries of Paris."

The section of the catacombs open to the public is only a small part of an extensive network of underground tunnels, which spans more than 186 miles in length.

The entrance is at 1 Place Denfert-Rochereau in the 14th arr. (Or at least the official entrance. There are numberous places at which they can be entered unofficially (and technically illegally).

  2. Very well described by Rifillane. I loved going there, it is humid and has many anedoctes that you can discover as you progress there. I also went in the unofficial parts and would not recomend it to anyone who does not have a wetahered guide.
