This is the site of the ancient city of Troy, where Helen of Troy lived after being carried off by Paris, and where the Greeks left a wooden horse as a ploy to end the siege of the city. Presumably the ruins are not that much to see, but it is an iconic place.

  3. I've visited a few times and love it but I know others who have been very disappointed by it.

If you are interested in the history of the site I recommend "In Search of Troy" by Michael Wood which was a BBC series in the 80s. It is available as both a DVD and in book form.
