  1. I visited the ones in Belize!!! FANTASTIC!!!!!!

  2. Yes. It's quite an experience.

  3. I agree, Copan is the place to go. It was the home of the best ancient Mayan sculptors. Their work is everywhere. The main staircase is the biggest collection of Mayan stone glyphs(writing) anywhere, even though the archaeologists re-assembled it incorrectly during restoration. Copan has the best preserved Mayan pyramid, located inside another pyramid. Mayans often built one pyramid on top of an older one, but they used to destroy the older one first. At Copan, they buried an intact pyramid. Even the paint job is in good shape!

  4. Yes, Copan is pretty much the main Mayan ruin in Honduras to visit. Copan is among the best Mayan sites out there.

It has extensive stone carvings and substantial buildings. It may not be the biggest mayan site, but in terms of the surviving mayan carvings based on preservation and artistic qualtiy it is tops.

Since Honduras is on the southern edge of the Mayan area, Copan is the only substantial Mayan ruin in the country (and it is under 15 miles from the border).  Smaller mayan sites exist throughout the area but they are not substantial and Copan is the only one I know of in Honduras that is worth a visit if in the area (compared to about 50 in Mexico, 50 in Guatemala and 30 or so in Belize).

I have visited about 40 Mayan sites throughout central america and Copan is my third favorite.
