Has anyones mind ever blocked out certain images?

I just recently lost my job and someone I really came to like I cant even recall their face now, others in the office I can recall just as vividly as I see my own face. The same thing occured when I lost my mother I couldn't recall her face for months - why is that?

It seems to be an inbuilt safety net, or screen that we all have. We naturally avoid that which causes us pain, the mind will do likewise.
