  1. there has been scientists and scientific expeditions that have traveled atop mount olympus and wound up with no results proving that any civilization had ever existed ontop of mt olympus.. so should they be real? The greeks aren't accurate on their own history.

  2. It's classified as a myth because no evidence supports it as a fact.  Until evidence is found proving that Zeus and the greek gods existed, it will continue to be a myth.

I used to think that they existed as humans and were deified as "gods".  I don't believe that anymore, but I still love mythology.

  3. All their gods were just the same as gods today; all false, but some things were not false.  It is very intersting reading.

  4. So... How long have you been living in a cave? My guess is 4000 years.

  5. the point of it being called mythology is because they can never find any actual physical evidence to prove any of it.

  6. Much of what was told in Greek mythology had been adopted by so many cultures that came after them. Especially the Romans who carbon-copied the Greek beliefs and just changed the original names of the deities to Romanize them. There are so much about Greek mythology that still remains unsolved but are constantly being explored by historians, geographers and modern scientists. If there is no hint of truth and reality to those beliefs, those modern-day geniuses wouldn't bother to waste their time at all.

  7. There may be kernels of truth in all mythology. Greek or otherwise. (Place names and such) The stories, whether true or not, have been embossed to such an extent that that we cannot now say where the line between truth and fiction is drawn.

  8. The problem with disproving something is that you can never ultimately show that something does NOT exist. Let's take the Christian god, for example- although lots of science goes against their theory of creation (ie. evolution), science can never prove that there is no such thing as that god because, purely in theory, he could be out there somewhere and we haven't found him. Heck, science can't even disprove the existence of unicorns, really- all they can prove is that there is no evidence that they exist.

So while no evidence of the Greek mythology's actual existence has been found, science can't actually prove it wrong.

  9. Most myths are what is called 'etiological'. It is a greek word meaning "Giving a reason for". That is, most  myths are stories that purport explain why something is the way it is - in terms understandable to people at the time.

For example, the story about the rainbow after the Biblical Flood is an etiological explanation for the cause of rainbows.

Many mythical stories have their roots in folktales that have common themes related to basic human needs and desires common to all of us. For instance, many myths are about a guy going off to find a foreign bride. Or a foreign suitor coming to take a bride. Or acquiring food or wealth.

Many people will point out Joseph Campbell for some more in-depth analysis of the psychological factors and symbolism in myths, though I think he goes a little overboard (too much Freud and Jung).

Regardless, people's interest in Greek Myth isn't because they believe it is *true*. It is because it provides insight into the earliest human cultures, as well as humanity in general. These are the oldest stories ever told, and that they still speak to people in a modern world says something about the significance of the themes they deal with.

  10. Go ahead and believe in pagan ways. I'm a Christian and I believe in 1 God All powerfull Omnipotent Magnificant. Awesome.

  11. not to mention that these stories have been passed down from generation to generation  by word of mouth so they are most exaggerated but im sure that they are true in a sense regarding the sense to the subjects of morality that i teaches. In a way they are like proverbs...so the details in the staory may not be true but the message behind it is

  12. Pretty much the concept of religion has been proven wrong.  The onyl religion that hasn't been proved wrong is the ancient chinese mythology.

Do you mean you believe there were supernatural beings as described in Greek myths alive in ancient times?

You might want to look up Hellenic Re-constructionists?

    Z - E - U - S by the way!

  14. It doesn't really need to be proven wrong. You can prove greek mythology wrong as much as you can prove any other religion wrong or right. Go on believing in whatever you feel like.

  15. No, but Ragnarok is coming. The Norse mythos were the true religion.

Fun fact: Jesus is actually Greek in origin, meaning SON OF ZEUS. That doesn't mean anything since Jesus' original name as a Hebrew was probably Yeshua (like Joshua). Also, the planets are named after Roman gods, which are pretty much Greek gods.

  16. Myths (All myths, much of which forms foundations for modern religions) often contain kernels of truth.  For instance, Schliemann, and nineteenth century archeologist, was convinced Homer's Illiad was more than pure fiction.  Sure enough, he found the ruins of Troy by using geographical descriptions in the story of the Trojan War.  The ruins showed that a great battle had indeed taken place at about the right time in the middle of the bronze age.  So does that mean it is all true?  The Priam and Paris and Hector and all the Greeks were genuine historical figures?  Probably not.  Even the names refer to real people, the life Homer gave them was fictitious.  Did the war really start of the kidnapping of Helen?   Again, maybe, but it's more likley that the Trojans had a strangle hold on trade with East Asia, and the Greeks wanted to cut out the middle man.

No matter what parts are true, and what parts are poetic, the stories can be used to illuminate aspects of human nature.  They act as metaphors for the conflicts, internal and external, that every human must navigate.

Myth has wider shoulders than facts because it carries a larger burden of truth.
