Has it become more common to buy used cars with miles over 115K?

I am in the market for a used car in the price range of 3K-4K and cant seem to find a decent car with miles under 90K, except for Hyundai, Fords and other American cars which I am not interested in. Hondas, Camrys, Mazdas, Acura(Honda), Mitsu's seem to be all over 120K for that range. Is this common now in 2008? I just need a car for 18 months.

I guess its more how the car was taen care of rather than miles right?

  1. a used car that has reached the 100K mile mark and gone over deserves a slap in the butt with a huge markdown. the depreciated value will be low as it gets considering that the car is deemed "shot" as they would say it. if the practice of buying these cars is common nowadays, i must not be one of them. i wouldnt even look into buying a used car that has half that amount of miles on it. i can usually surprise myself with a car that only has around 20-40K miles on it. most Japanese cars from Honda, Toyota, and some from Nissan typically fare better or "age" better as they would call it than others when it comes to used cars.

  2. Well no. Todays engines are a lot better designed then years ago. A car with 100,000 miles years ago was considered shot. Todays cars are better designed that 100,000 - 150,000 is not uncomon today. In my shop I find more and more cars with over 100,000 miles on them. Not to say thy are breaking down soones, most are in for a tune up or a timing belt change.

  3. Yeah definately.  my mechanic says my camry is gonna go 300,000 while I looked at a cherokee with 94000 miles, it was toast.

I just bought a camaro with 144000, that my mechanic approved. If you're worried about buyi a car with high mileage then take it to your mechanic and have him give it an inspection. my mechanic does a two hour inspection for $50.

  4. Yes, newer cars are now made better and have longer lasting engines..

But if you want good fuel mileage (30 in town) and be able to get your money back, get an old Mercedes! they last a Long long time...read this report. They dont matter how many miles they have on them. AND you get free basic roadside service no matter what age the car is!

or even an old VW TDi diesel which gets 50mpg, and go for more that 500,000 miles...

  5. yes it is more common now. Its verry hard to find a good used car now days with low milage. But now there making cars better so you can get more miles out of them. Ofcourse there prices have gone through the roof. If i needed a car and found one for 4,000 with only 115k on it, i would but it in a heartbeat!!! Most used cars ive seen for 4k have like 200k and up.    good luck
