Has it ever been in Canada's interest to acquire land in warmer territories (like the U.S. did with Hawaii)?

  1. I have heard of an Island that wanted to become part of Canada (as opposed to Canada trying to acquire it). They were excited about it and learned the national anthem and everything...

They tried twice I think, but it never went through. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the island itself...

    Edit:

Ah yes! Here it is! It was the Turks & Caicos Islands...

And it seems that Canada was also taking active parts in trying to annex the country. I was told that it was the islands who were suggesting this, but it appears the person who was telling me this might have been misinformed.

  2. Well actually, I read in the newspaper about a week ago (or probably two) that the Quebec's governement thought about buying an island, in the 80's or 90's, where every Quebecer could go on vacation and still spend their canadian dollar.

But it never ever became anything, because who would want to feel like in the middle of their own neighbor while on vacation ?! :P

But that I know of ? Nothing like Hawai :p

  3. the US didn't acquire Hawaii because it was warmer.

It  acquired it because it is in the middle of the ocean and we needed a fueling and repair station for our ships.
