If not, is it confidently supposed this will ultimately become possible as science progresses?

  1. Yes it has. As it turned out, under the correct conditions the DNA in the bone marrow will perserve. We have enough extracted to tell us where our mtDNA has come from.

  2. Let's take Jeremy's word for it.  Meanwhile; consider the unfortunate selection by Anthropolgy to designate these early remains 'Homo Erectus', since that translates to 'Standing Man', of which class we are all members.

  3. No credible discoveries to my knowledge... However, some claim to have extracted erectus DNA & the methodology is still under review.

Mungo man of Australia is thought to be an erectus/sapien hybrid by some, because the MtDNA tests as closer to neandertal than to sapien.

To my knowledge Mungo man has not been discredited as a find, but the latest dating is 40,000 yrs for the fossils & 50,000 for artwork and artifacts. Like most finds that contradict some long held views, the finds at Mungo Lake will be under review for a decade or two. Noone disputes the modern looking human or new date of 40,000 yrs, but the DNA findings are hotly disputed as it indicates a "possible" sapien/erectus hybrid.
