Has marijuana ever been used, with success, to treat schizoaffective disorder, or schizophrenia?

Hi. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder a couple of years back and am looking for an alternative to the medication I am currently on. The meds I am on right now have a couple of side effects I dont like - namely, I sleep way too much and I gain bad weight VERY easily. I have to exercise a lot to stay a decent size. I have heard that smoking MJ helps.... any truth to this?

  1. I doubt there has been any serious research on this.

The latest research showed a slightly higher use of MJ in people who would later get diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Unfortunately the scientist who did this study forgot that correlation <> cause.

An alternative explanation would be that people with early symptoms of schizophrenia are more likely to smoke MJ, either because of their symptoms or because people predisposed to schizophrenia are also predisposed to smoke MJ.

This would explain why the number of diagnoses of schizophrenia has *fallen* whilst cannabis consumption has risen significantly and skunk has become more preavalent.

This was the reasoning behind the experts' advice to the Govt to keep cannabis at Class C.

A colleague of mine has ~80% success rate treating schizophrenia without drugs:

  2. i doubt it

  3. yes it has

  4. I thought smoking it can cause scizophrenia so it wouldnt be a good idea plus its illegal.

  5. honestly, i think don't think marijuana would help.

with the trips, along with schizophrenia.

    not such a good mix.

  6. Check out Erowid.org and also maps.org and see what you can find out.

  7. Psychedelics have been known to make schizophrenia worsen, not get better. marijuana is considered a mild hallucinogen so I really don't think it would help at all.
