  1. I am so glad I saw this question!

You most definitely should DONATE your child's cord blood.

Here is a link that tells you about donating. If there is not a donation center near you, there is a company listed that will still accept it for free, it just takes a little extra paperwork on your part.

    http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Donate_Cord_B...

You can have it collected and store it for yourself, but here is what you need to know about that:

    *It is VERY expensive

*The chances your child or a family member will be able to use it are slim to none.

*Your child wouldn't be able to because MOST of the time, the 'defect' in his/her DNA is also in the cord blood. They need different cord blood with different DNA to solve the problem.

*The storage companies will try to convince you otherwise. That's how they make money.

My daughter was saved by donated cord blood. (see source)

  2. If your in the uk these are the places you can donate for the NHS. Cord blood can be donated at Barnet General Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital, Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Watford General Hospital. However it is not for your own personal use & will be given to other people. If you want to keep it for your own personal use then you will have to go private & when i looked into it last year prices started from £1000 so it didn't do it as we couldn't afford it. Google cord bank & you will find more information.

  3. Not positive, but I know it is really expensive, there is a one time cost and then a monthly fee...sorry i couldn't be more help...have you asked your doctor or contaced one of the companies that offers it?

  4. I did Viacord. It is expensive, but I think it is worth it. We haven't had to use it yet, but I know that if we do need it, I will be so happy that I have it.

Here is what it cost- it was $2000 (or close to that) up front with an annual charge OR you can pay the $4000 (again, close to that number) and then you don't have an annual fee- we chose the $4000 option.

Call the different companies and ask them to send you info, you need to decide before you go to the hospital.
