  1. I dont think it has

  2. Directly, I'm sure it has, but it's been so long that I would have to look it up to see when.  Long Island gets hit pretty often, at least it seems often to me.  NYC does get the rain and wind from a hurricane, but it's never as bad as the shore.  I grew up in North Jersey about an hour away from NYC, and we even got the wind and rain, but again never too bad.  Only once (while I lived there) were the wind and rain so bad that it caused problems for visibility and whatnot that school was cancelled and people stayed home from work.  It was Hugo.

  3. only once in the last 100 years but dozens of times over the last 1000

  4. yes in Manhattan a long time ago not sure when but it was called hurricane donna

  5. I am almost positive that Long Island was hit by a hurricane, back in the 1930's. No, I am positive!

  6. no but its due

  7. 1821: The only hurricane in modern times known to pass directly over parts of New York City pushed the tide up 13 feet in one hour and inundated wharves, causing the East River and the Hudson River to merge across lower Manhattan as far north as Canal Street. Deaths were limited since few lived there at the time.

1893: A category 1 hurricane destroyed Hog Island, a resort island off the Rockaways in southern Queens.

1960: Hurricane Donna created an 11-foot storm tide in the New York Harbor that caused extensive pier damage. Forced 300 families to evacuate Long Island.

1999: Floyd, weakened to a tropical storm, brought sustained 60 mph winds and dumped 10-15 inches of rain on upstate New Jersey and New York State.

2004: The remains of Hurricane Frances in September flooded city subways, stranding some passengers aboard trains that had to be stopped by flooded tracks.

They say that there is a 38% chance of one hitting New York this year.

  8. It usually not a direct hit in New York City. The eyes of hurricanes usually go over Long Island. NYC just experiences wind and rain from the hurricane but it still can cause significant damage. We usually get a hurricane about once a decade. In 1938, we had the "Great New England Hurricane of 1938", "1944 Great Atlantic Hurricane", Hurricane Connie (1955), Hurricane Donna (1960), Hurricane Belle (1976), Hurricane Gloria (1985), Tropical Storm Floyd (1999). But we've haven't gotten hit in the 2000's yet. A major hurricane (Category 3 or greater) hits New york City and Long Island approximately every 70 years. There was one in 1869 and the last one was "The Great New England Hurricane of 1938." And 2008 is the 70th anniversary of it. They've been predicting this, since 2006. So including this year and the following years, we should watch out for a major hurricane. It's coming and unfortunately no one here is ready for it.

  9. No but there could be one in the years to come
