I went to the store with my four year old daughter today. There was an middle aged lady in the same aisle we were in. My daughter Esme was having one of her temper tantrums. I said "Esme, you can't get that! Maybe next time?" Well the woman huffed and mumbled "Esme, what a name. Poor child probably gets teased. No wonder she's throwing a tantrum."

I didn't say anything to her I just walked away. But I thought it was very rude!

Has someone ever said anything nasty about your child's name?

  1. Yes, it was rude of her to say such a thing and it seems when something is out of the ordinary, some people make a comment about it of make fun of it.  Some people choose to belittle somethings because that do not understand them.  Esme is a nice name and means 'esteemed' or 'loved'.

Part of my name came form my family heritage and part of it was came from the planet Venus, as Venus was the only bright object that could be seen in the morning.  I have had comments about my name, but I just shrug it off.  The friends and people I know really liked how my name is.  Many of the kids in my class thought it was neat that my name had two x's in it.

I  friend of mine has the middle name of 'Thistle'.  Some had asked why she was named after a weed.  Some people do not know how beautiful the flower of the thistle is, plus the thistle is a part of the family's coat-of-arms.

Some people just can't help being rude I suppose.

  2. everyone has an opinion.  don't let it get to you... if you like the name, then no one else has to.

  3. I can't believe someone would say that...!! How horrible!! It's not like you named her "Poopface" or something completely ridiculous.  Esme is a pretty name!

I don't have kids, but I'd be really offended and angry if someone did something like that to me.  That lady must be one hardcore "witch" with a B if she treats strangers like that...imagine what her husband/children/co-workers/etc. have to put up with!!!  You know what? She probably named he kids something really plain that are so common there were 5 kids with the same name in their class!  How creative...

  4. I agree, it's unbelievably rude. She must be very closed-minded. Oh well, some people are just like that. =/

By the way, I think Esme is a really pretty choice! =D

  5. Well i don't have kids but yes that was exceptionally rude of the woman to comment on your daughters name like that.

Esme is a traditional, beautiful name with class - however if your daughters name was kayileeeeeeeeee-Destinaeeeeeeee then the woman would have a point.

Your daughter has a lovely name - one of my personal faves :)

  6. oh my gosh! people are so rude. is it is-mae?? Either way its none of her business! I dont yet have children but im pregnant and want to name her xyla - yes! like xylophone. People give me sh t about it already! I like it that we are coming up with unique names these days. It beats the same ole same ole :)

  7. Wow, obviously this woman has never heard of the name Esme before which is a fairly traditional name.  Just so you know, I happen to think that Esme is a beautiful name.  I first heard it years ago in a book and thought it was pretty.  I've never met anyone with the name but I do like it.

  8. wow that is rude!! ♥ ur child has a lovely unique name, if soemoen sed that to me, i wud say "tease? liek ur doing right now?"

  9. That's terrible!

    I love the name Esme!

It is becoming more popular and someday probably will be a common name and that lady will feel silly.

  10. Oh don't let it get to you.  The old bag was of her meds, that's all.

  11. no but I agree with that women

  12. That is so rude of that lady. Esme, while not some people's tastes, is at least a name that people have heard of and use! Its not like Apple or Moses or weird names like that! Even if you hate a name, don't say it to their face.

  13. I think that is extremely rude. It is none of her bussiness what some one names their child. Perhaps she wasn't too happy about her name, herself.

  14. I havent heard anyone but that lady was extreamly rude! How dare she! That is just wrong. People in this world can be so horrible today. Im sorry that this happened to you. I happen to like your daughters name.

  15. That's incredibly rude!

I don't have any children but I care for my sister who is called Rayne (she's also four) . I was at the park with her and she was on her scooter and I said "Rayne be careful or you'll fall." And this teenage lad nearby laughed and said "Rayne? Why not call her Sun?" Needless to say I was less than impressed. I didn't have anything witty to say and I didn't want to cause a scene so I rose above it. And even though I didn't name my sister I was hurt because I think Rayne is a beautiful name as is Esme.
