Has something been invented that you can spray on your?

jewelry that stops it from turning your skin green?

All jewelry turns my skin green except for real gold and I don't have enough money to buy only gold jewelry. I realize it is a chemical in my make-up (chemistry) that causes this, but I cannot believe there is not a solution?

THANKS FOR ANY INPUT

  1. Green skin results from nickel (used as an alloying agent in many jewelry alloys) oxidizing in the presence of sweat or other chemicals on the skin.  Nickel salts are green.

To prevent the nickel from oxidizing, you could try spraying the jewelry with a varnish to protect it.

I think nickel oxide forms a passivated surface rather than spalling off (the salts produced by the reaction with skin are soluble, and dissolve off the surface), so if you oxidized the surface, you might be able to prevent more nickel from dissolving - I think there is a product for copper that uses dichromate (caution, this is carcinogenic) and you could try a steel bluing solution.

Varnish or lacquer is probably the easiest and best solution, though it will somewhat alter the look of the jewelry.
