Question:

Has space travel affected Earth's climate / weather system?

Climate change and pollution are very hot topics at the moment. I'm just wondering if anyone is aware of any research or information about the impact space travel, rocket and satellite launches have had on our climate. Could it be possible that this alone has caused the largest amount of damage to our environment? The reason I ask is that I have heard of people reporting weird weather immediately after these launches, plus on quite a few occasions the shuttles got struck by lightening also the whole process really involves burning a massive payload of fuel through our ozone layer…

  1. yes

  2. Nothing we as humans do could ever affect the environment as much as what Mother Nature does when there is a massive volcano eruption or other catastrophic natural event.  As for all the discussion on global warming and climate change; the media, for whatever reason, is making sure that you hear only one side of the story.  If you do your own research on-line you will see that there's still a lot of controversy on this (pardon the pun) hot issue.

  3. probably yes

  4. This may contribute but the percentage is merely so little compared to those that do came from carbon dioxide produce by cars..and big factories..In effect to this we are now experiencing global cooling..thus the concern is cold is more damaging than heat in terms of survival of plants and animals...

  5. no

  6. Rockets produce truly massive amounts of pollution for their size - but as there are so few of them, their contribution to the overall picture is insignificant - and without the satellites we wouldn't know about the ozone layer or ocean currents!

  7. Yes it has, damaging the ozone layer and making gaping holes in it. But space travel is not the only thing. The main thing to worry about is electricity, because it's been calculated that by two generations on, we will have run out of resources. Spaceships do use a certain amount of electricity, and Britain is clamping down on that as we speak.

  8. The energy involved is less than 1% of what the sun does in an hour. The ozone layer is where there is tremendous electric current flows. The ozone layer has a built in repair system . If the ozone gets a little thin the alpha radiation will bombard the nitrogen and trans mutate it to O3,or ozone.

  9. interesting question/statement. Much more likely is the efforts we are making here on earth to destroy our environment. Why for instance, do we need an 8 litre SUV to go shopping or visit the paper shop, or the pub?

  10. space traveling is creating a lot of space pollution, imagine there is a polution when no one is leaving over there and wat will heppend with we might settle there....
