Question:

Has the Cubs collapse begun?

I guess they decided to get an early start this year, beginning in August rather than September. I guess with the season ending earlier than usual, they wanted to ensure that things went smoothly. It's going to be a doozy!!

  1. Just Like 1969 All Over Again

  2. No matter how bad they collapse, they'll be in the Playoffs, but with the news of Zambrano and the possibly extension of the injury, the WS hopes are dim, and I can see some other team like the Brewers/Mets/Cards representing the NL

  3. Yes- and the Astros sweep was great !!!

  4. Don't worry Cubs won't collapse too far.  Like the Mets last year. And they have a good line up to take them off the hook.

  5. Funny how everyone sees a small slump and assumes it the Cubs collapsing.  They can play .500 ball the rest of the year and still coast into the playoffs.  How hard is it to look at a newspaper and see the Cubs are 30 games above .500 and have had the best NL record all year long?  Stop living in the past, things that happened in the past have nothing to do with the present.

  6. Yes, I believe it has, say goodbye for them for 2008, and start counting down the days for spring training 2009.

  7. Someone said that this is 1969 all over again...are you kidding me?!?

A couple of weeks ago the Angels had the best record in baseball and were the popular choice to win it all. Then they hit a rough stretch--similar to what the Cubs are going through now--and suddenly the Cubs were the best thing in MLB (again).

Now Tampa Bay is has the best record and the Cubs have dropped to #3 in overall record, a couple of games off the Rays pace. They've lost 5 straight and they're still 6 games up on the team with the 4th best record in baseball, the Mets.

Despite losing 5 in a row they still hold a 5-game lead in the Central with 22 to play. The last few years the team who's won it all has been thought to be dead in the water late in the season so I actually take this as a good sign that this is, indeed, the Cubbies year.

In the words of the immortal Alfred E. Neuman, "What, me worry?"

  8. nooo

  9. Yep!  AH HA HA!!

  10. Maybe they will do like the mighty New England Patriots did, have a great season & lose the big one(World Series)

  11. Every team in the Majors has streaks like this. This was the first time it's happened to the Cubs all season. Funny how you already count them down and out, and they're still 30 games over .500 and leading the division by 4.5 games (with Milwaukee currently trailing 3-1 against San Diego in Milwaukee). Call it an "early start" to let all the Cubs fans out there down, but every team goes through these streaks.

  12. Go Cards!

  13. The Cubs will come back and maybe go to the World Series. But they might lose in the World Series like most Nationals Teams.

  14. It might have.

  15. Beginning in August? They went 20-8 in August!!!!

They've lost five in a row, yes, but what team hasn't?

Zambrano is down for a little bit with tendinitis, but he should be able to come back in a week or two. A sigh of relief when many were thinking he may be done for the year.

The offense is in a slump, it happens. Their pitching has still been good enough to win games recently (aside from Tuesday), they're just not scoring the runs.

Any other contending team that has this problem would be nothing more than a bump in the road. Because it's the Cubs, everyone always assumes it's a collapse.

  16. I sure hope so-GO BREWERS!

  17. No, they will find their rhythm again, but I don't see them winning the WS against the Angels, Red Sox, or Rays. White Sox maybe.

  18. Ahhhhhhh I love how Cubs haters are piling on w/ the collapse / curse thing because of a 5 game skid.... the 1st of it's kind for the Cubs this year & their longest skid of their season. has whatever team you pull for had a 5 game skid this season? i'm sure they have but how many 5 game skids have they had? i'm glad to get this out of the way now & not in the post season. remember when the "collapse" was right after the All Star Break when the offense was in a funk? me either but you haters were talking, the Cubs rebounded & they will again.

All haters are seeing is the Cubs losing 5 in a row but let's take a closer look.

YES the Cubs lost 5 but they lost 2 to the Phillies who are still just 3 games out in the East & 4 games back in the Wild Card. those same Phillies have only won 5 of their last 10 & just dropped 2 to the Nationals that have the worst win percentage in the bigs (.383). i don't hear / read the trolls on here screaming about them (the losingest team in MLB history) choking.

YES the Cubs got swept at home to the Astros but the Astros are the hottest team in the MLB right now. they've won 8 in a row & have charged to within 6 of a Wild Card spot that is far from settled.

Let's take a look at the Brewers who like the Cubs are 5 of their last 10 & have lost 4 in a row at home themselves. NOW was the time for them to take over 1st in the Central but they are too worried about silly things like no hitters, not getting respect & other things not related to winning ball games.

so enjoy getting barbs in on the Cubs now because this is the mother of all next years - I BELIEVE!

EDIT i love how the guy wearing a mask (4 or 5 answers up from me) in his avatar ripped the Cubs every move in the 1st half of the season, then got on the bandwagon & was on it as late as a week ago, is throwing them under the bus again!

  19. yep. It's as plain as day!
